His father, Dennis Levitt, was once the news director for the Pacifica Radio station, KPFK-FM and his mother, Jane Gordon, ran for the United States Congress in California during the 1970s for the Peace and Freedom Party; she met Dennis Levitt while she was working as the program guide editor for KPFK-FM.

Gordon-Levitt began acting at age 4 and has appeared on TV, in numerous films and on stage. Recently, he has begun directing and producing.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is married to Tasha McCauley. He married his long-time girlfriend on December 20, 2014 at their Los Angeles home. McCauley is co-founder and CEO of the Silicon Valley-based robotics company Fellow Robots.
